Journal Five: Food Culture in Sierra Leone from Ved


Sierra Leone cuisine is delicious and healthy. It is quite simple, consisting mainly of rice-based dishes and hearty meaty stews. They also have variety of fruits, Seafood, potatoes and cassava which are snacks found on streets. But, Sierra Leonean consider Real food is rice, prepared numerous ways, and topped with a variety of sauces made from some combination of potato leaves, cassava leaves, hot peppers, peanuts, beans, okra, fish, beef, chicken, eggplant, onions, and tomatoes. In local bars they serve sweet, lightly fermented palm wine tapped from high tops of palm tree. In some villages, they have particular taboo and prohibitions against eating certain kind of foods like meat or oil, or even food prepared in certain ways. Violation of this taboos will lead to sickness or after death punishments.

In ceremonial events such as weddings, funerals and memorial service they prepared a large platter of rice and seafood. In certain occasions, they also required to offered a portion to ancestors in respect of their memory. Another common practice is they pour wine over the field in harvest season before sowing seeds to receive blessing from their ancestors.
